MIDDLESEX SCHOOLS TEAM SELECTION

The Schools’ Athletics Association of Middlesex (SAAM) is responsible for selecting athletes for regional, inter-county and national ESAA competitions.  Below outlines the selection process for cross country, combined events and track and field competitions.

Eligibilty for Middlesex Schools Selection:  Eligibility to compete for Middlesex Schools’ selection, is through your school being in a Middlesex Borough.  Eligibility and selection are not based on where an athlete lives and should not be confused with the club athletics pathway.  Your school needs to be affiliated to Middlesex Schools’ Athletics, either through borough affiliation, or individual school affiliation.

Cross Country

The ESAA Cross Country Championships take place in March each year. Each of the 46 counties can select 12 athletes, 8 of which are allowed to compete. The top 6 finishers in each county, count towards team totals.

Middlesex selection for this competition, is mainly through athletes competing for their borough at the Middlesex Schools’ Cross Country Championships, which usually take place towards the end of January. SAAM are not involved in borough selection for the county championships. Individual athletes and schools should check with borough managers for their selection process.

Combined Events

The ESAA Combined Events Championships take place in September of the following school year.  Qualification for the national championships, will be through either individual or team qualification, competing for Middlesex at the South East Regional Combined Events Final (late June).

Athletes, schools and borough managers can discuss selection with Overall Combined Events Team Mangager, David Lucas. U15 and U17 combined athletes will be considered for selection, through competing at the London Schools’ Combined Events Championships, or through the Surrey Schools’ Championships.

U19 combined events athletes will need to use Pof10 performances, to be considered for selection, for the South East Regional Final.

Track and Field

The ESAA Track and Field Championships take place in early July each year. Middlesex are currently an A category county, meaning we can select up to 70 athletes for this event, with up to three athletes in any one age group event (for example Junior Girls 100m).  Top 8 finishers score points for the county, as do those who perform at Entry or National Standard in their event.

Middlesex selection for this competition, is through a combination of athletes competing for their borough at the Middlesex Schools’ Track and Field Championships in mid-June and Team Managers tracking personal best performances on Powerof10.  The majority of athletes selected, will need to have achieved Entry Standard performances, whilst some athletes with close to Entry Standard performances are considered.

SAAM are not involved in borough selection for the county championships. Individual athletes and schools should check with borough managers for their selection process.

Track and Field Cup

The ESAA Track and Field Cup is supported by SAAM through the organisation of the initial ‘county’ round early in May.  Entry for the competition is down to individual schools, with athletes competing for their school team.  Athlete performances are awarded points for their team, to produce school team totals. The highest scoring schools can progress from the 1st round, through to an A or B Regional Final in June and then the ESAA Track and Field Cup National Final.

SAAM would encourage as many Middlesex Schools as possible to get involved in this fantastic team competition and any of the committee would be more than happy to support PE teachers/sports coaches with any advice you need for the competition.
